Hiram Women’s Volleyball Sweeps 2019 Hiram Invitational

HIRAM, Ohio - September 21, 2019 Hiram Terriers women's volleyball swept the 2019 Hiram Invitational on Saturday at Price Gymnasium, picking up a pair of three-set victories against Baldwin Wallace and Penn State Altoona to move to 11-3 on the season.

MATCH 1: Hiram 3, Baldwin Wallace 0

All tied up at five, the Terriers used a 7-1 to open a 12-6 lead in the open set against the Yellow Jackets. Baldwin Wallace made their way back to within two, but the Terriers again pulled ahead, scoring four-straight points off Mackenzie Brannon's serve to take a 22-14 lead.

Baldwin Wallace would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, and Hiram took the first set, 25-20.

The Terriers came out hot in the second set, scoring four-straight on Kayla Cole's serve to open an early lead. Hiram maintained a two-point lead for much of the set, before opening a seven-point, 19-12 lead.

The Yellow Jackets battled back to within four, but a Lindsey Walker kill slowed Baldwin Wallace's run, and the Terriers eventually pulled out a 25-19 victory.

With a three-set victory over the previously undefeated Yellow Jackets in their sights, Hiram went back-and-forth with Baldwin Wallace before opening another five-point lead.

The Terriers led, 12-7, but the Yellow Jackets wouldn't go down without a fight, storming back to cut the lead to 12-11 and force Hiram to take a timeout.

Hiram regrouped though, scoring seven of the next eight points to pull away. The Yellow Jackets found one last run, cutting the Terriers' lead to just three, 21-18, but kills from Walker and Cole stopped the run and allowed Hiram to finish off the set, 25-20, and earn the three-set victory.

Walker led the Terriers with 13 kills, adding 10 digs, while Emily Chrustic tallied a game-high 41 assists. Cole, Kiara Franks and Madison Fortune joined Walker in tallying double-digit kills, notching 11, 10 and 10 kills, respectively, while Cole also led the Terriers defensively with 14 digs.

The Terriers outhit the Yellow Jackets, .280 to .115, while almost doubling up Baldwin Wallace's kills, 49-28.

With the win, the Terriers moved to 10-3, while the Yellow Jackets suffered their first loss, falling to 13-1.

MATCH 2: Hiram 3, Penn State Altoona 0

After an attack error gave Penn State Altoona the first points of the match, Hiram quickly raced out to an early lead. Unable to break Cole and Jaya Martin's serve, Hiram opened an 11-2 lead and never looked back.

The Terriers scored six-straight points with Amber Ricketts serving, taking an 18-5 lead, before rolling to a 25-11 victory in set one.

The Terriers again opened the second set with a run, as Chrustic serving gave the Terriers a 5-0 lead. Hiram kept the Lions at an arm's length, before Penn State found a huge run of their own, tying the match and taking a 13-11 lead.

But the Terriers responded, scoring eight of the next nine points to push ahead. The Lions would close the gap to just two, but Cole and Melina Lee helped solidify the 25-20 victory with an ace and a kill.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in set three, with neither team able to build up too much of an advantage. However, with Hiram's lead at just one, a pair of aces by Walker helped spearhead an 8-2 run, giving the Terriers a 20-13 lead.

The Terriers held Penn State to just three points the rest of the way, and a kill from Zia Williams finished off the victory, giving Hiram their second sweep of the invitational.

Cole led the Terriers with nine kills, while Chrustic and Madison Burns each recorded double-digit assists, with 16 and 11 apiece, respectively. Walker led the Terriers with 14 digs.

With the win, the Terriers move to 11-3 on the season, while Penn State Altoona drops to 3-6.

Hiram will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 24 when they host Heidelberg University in a non-conference matchup at Price Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
