Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Slate with Loss Against Denison
HIRAM, Ohio – December 4, 2019- A layup in the waning seconds proved to be the difference as Hiram women's basketball dropped a 75-72 decision to Denison University in a competitive matchup in Price Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. 
The Terriers dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference, the Big Red improves to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC. Denison received votes in the second weekly Women's Basketball Coaches Association Poll.  
Inside the fourth quarter, the game could not find a clear winner as the two sides saw the score knotted at 70-70 with 1:43 remaining. 
The Big Red's leading scorer Alison Schafer hit a three seconds later the stretch Denison's lead to 73-70.  
Junior Tashauna Wright scored off of a pair of free throws to put Hiram in reach by one (73-72).  
Denison responded one last time with a layup to cement the 75-72 win.  
The Terriers opened up the game holding an 18-16 advantage in the first quarter.  
The Big Red tied the game 31-31 with 2:20 left in the second quarter. Hiram closed the quarter with a 5-0 run. Wright and freshman Alyssa Maraia each contributed a basket (36-31).  
The third quarter was played similar to the other frames with the Terriers holding a 23-21 scoring advantage shooting 60 percent from the floor.  
Wright finished with a team-high 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior Alainna Conroy added 13 points and two assists. While sophomore CiCi Bright chipped in 10 points and three rebounds.  
The Terriers finished the night shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line, forcing 16 turnovers, and 10 steals.  
Hiram will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 7, as they travel to Ohio Wesleyan. The matchup with the Battling Bishops is scheduled for 1 p.m.
