Women's Basketball falls in first game of Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Hiram College women's basketball team suffered its second defeat of the season by a 75-62 score at the hands of host Marietta at the Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot.

The Pioneers remain perfect with a 5-0 mark in the season, while the Terriers fall to 4-2.

Hiram will now take on Case Western in the Consolation Game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sophomore Mercedes Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Ponitz Career Technology Center) paced the Terriers with her third double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Allison Vannoy (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) tued her career-high with 11 points and also finished with six assists. Junior Kayla Yost (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

A early layup from Jones gave the Terriers a 6-4 edge. But Marietta responded with the next 10 points to take a 14-6 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter.

The Pioneers led 14-10 after one period and Hiram pulled to within one, at 21-20 on a 3-pointer from Yost midway through the second.

Marietta would close the half on a 10-3 run to take a 31-23 lead into the intermission.

In the third quarter, the Pioneers were red hot and pushed their lead to 55-33, their largest of the game.

The Terriers would pull back to within single digits at 67-60 with 2:48 left in the contest, but were unable to get any closer.

Hiram finished the game 20-of-51 (39.2 percent) from the field and 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) in 3-pointers. Marietta was 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) in shooting and knocked down 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) treys.

The Terriers won the rebounding battle 37-31, but committed 24 turnovers, compared to just 14 for the Pioneers.
