Men's Lacrosse Falls Short of Wilmington
HIRAM, OHIO -- Freshman Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) scored four goals and assisted on another, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College men's lacrosse team fell to Wilmington College, 10-8, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.
Wilmington (4-6) scored the first two goals of the first quarter, but Hiram (1-6) got on the board with Summers' first goal at the 11:05 minute mark on a man-up advantage with an assist from senior Caleb Capron (Salem/West Branch), one of his four helpers on the day, to make the score 2-1. The Quakers found the back of the net again shortly after to extend the margin back to a pair of goals, 3-1. The Terriers tallied the final two goals to end the period, all by Summers, to even the game at 3-3 after the first 15 minutes.
Summers opened the second quarter with Hiram's third straight goal to take the lead, 4-3, with 9:32 left in the half. The only other two scores in the quarter were scored by Wilmington with one coming at the 7:04 mark and another just before the end of the half to give the Quakers a 5-4 advantage at the break.
Hiram knotted the game at 5-5 with a goal by freshman Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) at the 10:38 mark of the third period, but the Quakers regained the lead just under a minute later to make the score 6-5. In addition to his four assists on the day, Capron scored a goal of his own with 4:48 left to tie the game for the fourth time with a score of 6-6. Wilmington then made its move scoring three straight times to end the period to lead 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Lekan recorded both goals in the fourth with one at the 11:19 mark and then with 4:13 left in the game to pull Hiram to within a goal at 9-8. The Quakers put the game away with an insurance goal with just 49 seconds left in the game and hung on for the 10-8 victory.
Hiram was led by the duo of Summers and Capron who both ended the day with five points. Summers scored four goals on nine shots to go along with an assist, while Capron had a goal scored and four assists. Lekan finished the game with three goals while freshman John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward) rounded out the point scorers with an assist.
In goal, freshman Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) played the entire game making 16 saves in 26 shots faced.
Hiram will travel to Springfield for a North Coast Athletic Conference game against Wittenberg University on Saturday, Apr. 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
